How To Set Goals And Reach Them

What is Goal Setting?

Successful people almost always set goals to enable them to be more joyful, proactive and accomplished.

Goal setting gives you something to work towards, facilitates the journey ahead and controls your deviations from the path you wish to achieve in the future.

People who set goals have more purpose in their lives, feel more motivated to get through the day, have something to look forward to and feel much more contented everytime they go a step further in reaching their goal.

So how do you go about setting your goals?

A very important step in this process is to create a life list and follow the necessary steps to completion.

As you embark upon the process of writing down your goals ask yourself the question "Why not?" as you create your future.

This type of limitless thinking has set a number of people free as they have designed their goals.

Instead of approaching the process with a "Why me?" attitude, they have transformed this question into "Why not me" and thereby altered their perceptions of themselves and their goals accordingly.

Written goals produce better results than goals that aren't written down. Writing goals in a place where you can easily seem them has the effecct of reminding you of your commitment to yoursel, and it also allows other people to add their support and ideas to the accomplishment of your goals.

When we write down our goals, we automatically begin to scan our environment and psyche for people and situations that facilitate the accomplishment of those goals.

The process of writing down a goal seems to stimulate a more hopeful mind-set, which in turn has been found to evoke a more creative type of "pathways thinking", one that generates multiple solutions.

The Bucket-list Approach
A traditional goal-setting method that works for a lot of people, is the Bucket List. You write down everything you want to do before you die, or even before you hit a certain milestone, like getting married, turning 40, or retiring.

Vision Boards
If images speak to you in ways that the written word doesn't, try making a vision board of your life list goals that includes any number of visual media, e.g. photographs, magazine images, advertisements, scraps of fabric, CD covers, ticket stubs, and even jewellery.

Typically, a vision board is a massive collage created on a poster board; you can place one almost anywhere that regularly gets your attention - inluding the refrigerator door or bedroom mirror.

Scrapbooks
These are great tools for multiple activities. One of the most clever uses of scrapbooks is to decorate each page with images of a particular goals, leaving a blank space in the middel of the page to record when the goal is actually accomplished .

One way of uncovering goals is also to ask yourself who you would spend another day with if you had the chance. This encourages you to think about the opportunities you might be missing in your own life to spend time with a valued person, like a grandparent or friend.

There are fun an interative sites online that allow people to create and maintain lists for goal accomplishment. These sites also offer forums for goal setting and goal accomplishment online.

Creating a life list has the power to inspire you and those around you and most of the time motivates people around you to deisng their own life lists.

I agree that it is very important to write down your goals. I feel much better prepared to reach them after seeing them in writing. Thanks for the hub!

I am a huge fan of writing down my goals, creating vision collages, and revisiting goals often to ensure progress. I just revisited my 2012 goals last night and realized a couple were stretched too much while others were not enough. For example, reading 12 nonfiction books this year - not good enough since I finished 10 in January! However, reading a new book a day with my four year old..too much since she loves to read the same book over and over. So I increased my reading goal and decided to introduce two new books a week instead of 7 to my four year old. Thanks for creating a valuable hub. I am going to look into the scrapbook idea more since I love to scrapbook and never thought of doing it for my bucket list type goals!

Thank you Kellyward and EyesStraightAhead, glad you both enjoyed the hub. Anything to motivate us to reach our goals can't be bad and yes the collages are a great idea and keeps your eyes straight on your goals. EyesStraightAhead I would love to read more books but wish I had more time to sit down and finish one even once a forthnight. Thank you both for your encouragement.
