Regular meditation has many health benefits, including reduced stress, healing and mood enhancement.

In this fast-paced world, meditation provides stillness for our minds and nourishment for our bodies.

The more you meditate, the better you will feel. Here I list the four most popular types of meditation.

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is good for stress relief. TM teaches you to transcend and go beyond your thoughts, to the source of your thoughts. It goes to a place called pure awareness, where the brain and body are in deep rest and stillness.

You are initially given a mantra to repeat, which would be a word or sound that helps you to reach this state. When you are 'there', you have no thoughts, yet you will remain fully awake.

Studies have indicated that TM enhances creativity and is particulary helpful in stress reduction. To regularly put the brain into this state, deep rooted stress and tension dissolves and your ability to recover from the daily challenges becomes more enhanced.

For peace of mind, try Zen meditation. It is the central practice of Buddhism. Zen meditation can reduce stress and create peace of mind. The main point of Zen meditation is to let things go. It teaches you that so long as you're trying to get somewhere, you are not fully 'here'.

Zen meditation is simple. Just sit with an upright posture and be present to your experience, without needing to control or change it.

During Zen meditation, you become more accepting of the comings and goings of your thoughts and feelings and your mind becomes peaceful. This ability gradually reaches out into your life and you discover an inner sense of peace that don't depend on things in your life being exactly how you want them to be.

This approach gives rise to relaxation and wellness over time.

For general happiness try the Inner Smile Meditation. It is based on the idea that the mind becomes what it perceives. A smile or a happy memory is used to generate feelings of joy, which opens the energy of the heart.

When we perceive this happiness, our minds become stable and open, and we feel balanced. The inner smile teaches you to open your heart and create happiness within yourself so that you don't have to rely on the people and the world around you to make you happy.

During the meditation, you simply sit and feel the joy inspired by your smile or good memory. this fills the heart with joy which has a total positive effect on the entire body and changes the body's energy. Doing the meditation regularly keeps your heart open for long periods , so you constantly feel happy even when you're not meditating.

Try Mindfulness Meditation to get rid of anxiety and depression. This meditation style brings your awareness to the present moment. The general benefits come when you use the techniques into your everyday life.

Mindfulness meditation is based on the idea that we spend most of our time 'outside ourselves", either thinking about the past or the future. So in doing that, we don't fully experience the joy of life, and are more likely to think negative thoughts and remember negative memories which can lead to anxiety and depression.

Mindfulness meditation teaches you to recongize damaging thoughts and memories before they affect your mood and cause you anxiety. It allows you to step outside the negative self-talk and your reactions and emotions.

Mindfulness meditation can actually prevent depression, and positively affect the brain patterns that underlie anxiety, stress, depression. When these emotions arise they dissolve away more easily.

Mindfulness meditation offers easy and practical strategies to deal with difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions as they come up.

These four meditation strategies all help in various ways to change our attitudes and outlook towards life, and make us less anxious and depressed. All of them teach us that the more you meditate, the more benefits you will reap and the better you will feel.
